They include:
Two skate-parks, with young people involved in design and ongoing management
of both facilities.
Installation of five 'hang out shelters' and 22 multi-use games areas.
Setting up a 'youth contact team' with a brief to engage with young people who are considered a threat to the quality of life within local communities, particularly in the evenings, at weekends and during school holidays;
Anti-drugs and sports initiative - two 'sports against drugs' officers encourage young people, particularly those from deprived areas and minority communities, to resist substance misuse by participation in sports. They work closely with the Police, the Youth Offending Team, Connexions and the County Youth Service.
Figures show a reduction in offending levels. Following the introduction of the shelters and MUGAs, there was a 25% decrease in nuisance crime committed by young people aged 8 to 24. The anti-drugs and sports initiative has contributed to a reduction in crime and the fear of crime including cuts of 18 per cent in domestic burglary, 12 per cent in vehicle crime and 31 per cent in drug offences.
