Probation, Police, NHS, Housing Association, Local Authority
Who is it aimed at?
It targets prolific offenders who have at least 2 or 3 convictions. There have been 84 participants on the scheme from 2001 - April 2003, of whom 79 had a drug addiction, primarily heroin.
How does it work?
The project supervises persistent house burglars on Community Rehabilitation Orders or on Licence from jail. The initiative provides a 'one stop shop' for drug treatment, education and support.
Does it work?
The target for percentage reduction in burglary rates was 15%, in fact a 23% decrease has been achieved. 67% of those participants who completed the scheme had not reoffended 6 months later. A follow up evaluation by Teesside University is being conducted to look at the longer term effects.
