Community Payback in South London cuts crime
Over recent years the communal gardens at Elsinore Road in Lewisham, South London had become neglected, run down and used for dumping household refuge and unwanted furniture. As a consequence the area was heavily overgrown and attracted drinkers, drug users and other types of anti-social behaviour.
London Probation, Perry Vale Safer Neighbourhoods team and Lewisham Council have worked together since March, as part of the '100 day clean up campaign' to tackle the problems and clean up the area. Community Payback work groups have been busy cutting back overgrown bushes and heavy undergrowth, demolishing derelict sheds and clearing rubbish from communal gardens.
The work has resulted in a significant reduction in reported crime and has helped to improve the quality of life for local residents.
