Part of the wider Springboard organisation, aims to work with young adult offenders aged 18-21, who are at risk of receiving custodial sentences. The project targets low to medium risk offenders who live within the Sunderland /Houghton areas.
The project is funded by the Government's "Invest to Save" budget and provides accommodation plus a range of work-based learning activities, education, training and unpaid voluntary work. A "Specified Activity Requirement" is imposed to cover 60 days of prescribed activity and this should be completed within 6 months. It is an intensive programme of intervention which offenders must participate in.
Given that Springboard itself has considerable experience as a training organisation, a multitude of opportunities are offered during this period, including Building, Horticulture, Motor Vehicle Maintenance, Catering, First Aid or Fork Lift Truck Driving. It really all depends on the offender's choices and needs. Where necessary, other interventions will be bought in from outside providers.
A complementary programme of voluntary activities including sporting, cultural and recreational opportunities will also be made available but only the compulsory sessions contribute towards the 60 day specified activity target.
Although offenders may have agreed to participate in Clear Track, expecting it to be easier than custody, the reality is somewhat different and many find the programme extremely challenging. However, the project has seen its successes e.g. one participant fully engaged in all of the available courses and eventually got a work based placement followed by a job. He is now taking driving lessons and is keeping on the right side of the law.
