Spitalfields City Farm
A working farm that aims to divert young people away
from antisocial behaviour and crime by giving them skills and experiences
.
Who's involved?
Spitalfields City Farm, Tower Hamlets' Youth Inclusion and Support Panel, Youth Offending Team
Who is it aimed at?
Young people, aged 14-18, who are at risk of committing crime or have offended.
How does it work?
With £8,000 of funding from the Tower Hamlets Youth Offending Team, young people who are identified as at risk of committing crime or have committed crimes are referred to Spitalfields. They are paired up with volunteers who act as mentors. These volunteers often have come from the same background as the young people, many having had experiences in the criminal justice system or had problems with substance abuse. Once in the program, the youth are involved in reparation work around the farm, such as building bird boxes and gardening. Many of the youth have never stepped on a farm. With this new environment Spitalfields hopes to open their mind and broaden their horizons. On the farm the youth learn basic skills and training as well as having a great and new experience.
