SmartJustice Photography Competition (with cash prizes)
For North Eastern Groups Working in the Mental Health and Addictions Fields.
Prison isn't a hospital or a health centre; it's a punishment
of last resort. So why spend millions of pounds of taxpayers' money locking
up non-violent offenders who are mentally ill or addicted to drugs and
drink, when we could cut crime by investing in punishment and treatment
in the community instead?
During the course of 2008, SmartJustice will be campaigning
to change the way that offenders with these issues are dealt with - see
Smart Justice on Drugs, Drink & Mental
Health for more information. Instead of a conventional campaign
launch "event", SmartJustice North-East has decided to hold
a photography competition for local groups that are working in the field
of drugs, drink and mental health.
The Competition / Prizes
There are two separate themes to the competition: "Fresh
Start" and "Breaking the Cycle" and individual photographers
are free to interpret these themes as they wish. There will be prizes
awarded to the groups whose members take the winning photographs as follows:
for each theme, 1st Prize £200, 2nd Prize £100, 3rd Prize
£50. The individuals who actually take the photographs will also
receive prizes as follows; for each theme 1st prize - digital camera +
£75 of vouchers, 2nd prize = digital camera + £50 of vouchers,
3rd prize - £25 of vouchers.
Entries must be submitted by 25/7/08. A small number of
digital cameras have been purchased (which will later be offered as prizes)
and these can be used by groups, where required, on a rota basis. There
is also the possibility that some technical support may be available to
those groups that have little expertise in the photography field. Due
to the varying expertise of the participants, entries will be judged on
the basis of visual impact rather than technical competence.
