SmartJustice for Women
Launch Event
London
Michelle Collins, Juliet Stevenson, Sheila Hancock and Claire Rayner are all behind our campaign to reduce the number of women in prison.
SmartJustice for Women, launched on 27th July 2005 at HMP Holloway, is calling for an end to the practice of locking up vulnerable women
for non-violent offences and for an increase in the use of community based solutions to crime.
The launch was a really successful event, the audience response was really positive and we had a lot of TV and press interest.
This included an appearance on Womans Hour on Monday, a forthcoming feature in the Independent on Sunday, live broadcasts on
Channel 5 News and ITN and an opinion piece in the Edinburgh Evening News. Coverage also included Sky News Radio, BBC News 24,
BBC Radio London, Premier Radio, Radio Humberside and Young People Now.
Journalists from Take a Break, Marie Claire, The Mirror and the Womens Institute magazine were all at the event and are
planning to do features on the campaign.
We will be continuing to spread the word that prison is not the best place for women - it's expensive, ineffective and it does not
reduce crime.
We will be asking more people to sign our on-line petition and to get involved in the campaign by writing letters to MPs and to the
press.
We will be lobbying government, giving talks around the country and informing the media about the ineffectiveness of prison for women
and better alternatives.
